Astronomical Society Meeting at the Planetarium, January 8th
Friday, January 8th 2010
7:00 PM
MMSD Planetarium at Memorial High School, 201 S. Gammon Rd. Madison.
A special meeting of the Madison Astronomical Society (madisonastro.org)
**************
On January 7 1610 Galileo observed with his telescope what he described at the time as "three fixed stars, totally invisible by their smallness," all close to Jupiter, and lying on a straight line through it.
With this observation, Galileo helped to complete the revolution started by Copernicus. Join the MAS on this special evening in celebration of the 400th year of Galileo's observations of Jupiter. Using the planetarium's simulation capabilities, we will recreate the sky as seen by Galileo over Padua that night. Memorial astronomy teacher Art Camosy will present a program highlighting the significance of this event in history, science and art.
