Local Coalition of Reason: Should the Skeptics Join?

Dear Madison Skeptics,

Atheists, Humanists and Agnostics at the UW-Madison (the Secular Student Alliance affiliate), the Humanist Union of Madison, and Atheists and Agnostics of Wisconsin have agreed to start a local Coalitions of Reason for the greater Madison area. We, the Madison Skeptics, have been invited to join as well. Read about the United Coalition of Reason here:

http://www.unitedcor.org

The advertising campaign to officially launch the local coalition, funded by the national United Coalition of Reason will most likely take place after the start of college classes this fall. The name chosen for our coalition is likely to be influenced by what the member groups collectively decide about the pros and cons of trying to stay local (Madison Coalition of Reason), regional (South/Central Wisconsin Coalition of Reason) or state-wide (Wisconsin Coalition of Reason). There would be no cost to member groups, we would all would gain publicity by being part of this effort. The United Coalition of Reason brings some clout and some dollars, which gives us the possibility of taking part in a broader publicity effort, of getting the word out in our community that atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, and other nonbelievers are real people; neighbors, teachers, public figures, etc. The billboard campaign alone will raise awareness in communities all over the area.

Should the Madison Skeptics sign on as a member group?

Feel free to leave a comment here and discuss. Since the Madison Skeptics is not a membership organization, there is no vote. We will get a read on comments received via email, Facebook and Meetup to gauge reaction.
